COLIN TUCKER

Colin Tucker is an artist, writer, and curator who investigates intersections between music, art, and decoloniality. As an artist, they work with scores, installation, text, video, and artist books to make critical interventions around politics of sensation and territory. Current artistic projects include a book of event scores and related essays on the politics of sensation in the concert hall, and a series of site-specific interventions around the possessive territorial work of ostensibly banal infrastructures on occupied Turtle Island. As curator, he is presently working on performances and exhibitions of decolonial responses to Cageian and Fluxus performance. They live as a settler in Tkaronto/Toronto, on the occupied lands of the Dish with One Spoon Treaty. www.colintucker.studio

STATEMENT

This piece reckons with how the banalization of violence underwrites US empire. The piece traces the normalization of a watershed figure in British and US imperialism, Field Marshal Jeffrey Amherst, who in 1763 stated intent to commit genocide by spreading smallpox, and who likely caused a subsequent smallpox epidemic that wreaked havoc upon multiple Turtle Island Indigenous nations. To map the banalization of the Field Marshal’s violent legacy, the piece samples found text about a US settler colonial town named after him, Amherst, New York, on the occupied lands of the Seneca Nation and Haudenosaunee Confederacy, where I studied and worked for 12 years. This town is but one of many places and institutions across occupied Turtle Island named after the Field Marshal and other perpetrators such as Christopher Columbus and George Washington; together, these names form a ubiquitous, mundane infrastructure that normalizes the US’s ongoing occupation of sovereign Turtle Island Indigenous nations and lands, as well as the application of US techniques of colonization across the planet, such as presently through the outright genocidal actions of US empire’s Zionist outpost. As a way to mark and disrupt the found sentences’ banalization of violence, the piece replaces the Field Marshal’s name with the word “Perpetrator.”
